This piece was used as a practice piece from my teacher’s collection.
With complex breaks like this, each fragment must be joined step by step, carefully aligned and secured to prevent shifting.
The front has a fine crackle pattern (kannyū), so I applied a thin layer of water glue as a resist to stop urushi from seeping into the surface.
The back is unglazed and absorbent, making it vulnerable to staining. To protect it, I masked the entire reverse side during the early stages of the process (again and again..).
The final finish is bengara urushi, a deep red lacquer tinted with iron oxide.
